Josie D-G and Kayla P, the hosts of the podcast Casting it Out

Casting it Out is for the chaotic girls’ girl. Josie and Kayla bring their own experiences to the table and share a tell-all of things we all go through, but may keep behind closed doors. Casting it Out is a confessional podcast where we share stories to reclaim the meaning behind our experiences. Life shouldn’t be lived within the shame of something that didn’t go as planned. It should be launched into the next chapter, where what happened before is a part of you, a part of us, and there is nothing to be ashamed of.

Where did Casting it Out stem from? Josie was unemployed, applying to jobs for days on end, every day, absolutely losing her mind. The idea of podcasting had crossed her mind years before, during the pandemic, but it never came to fruition. During that time, she was in a group of friends where one shared that she had been reeling for the last month because her fiancé broke off their engagement. She shared that it was embarrassing to have to admit that’s where she landed in that long-term relationship. Then, one other friend stepped forward and said, “I was engaged before. I have an ex-fiance.” Josie shared that she also had an ex-fiance, feeling compelled to share in a moment where there was camaraderie around an event that she didn’t share often. Finally, it was said, “I wish I had known that other people around me have gone through this.” In that moment, it hit Josie, what if people did share this? What if I just threw it all out there with caution to the wind? And the to be named, Casting it Out, was created.

What brought Kayla to Casting It Out? Josie had recorded a few episodes over the last year. She hadn’t published anything, but knew she wanted to do this someday, eventually. Kayla had moved from the same area as Josie to Nashville. Josie had shared after once again being laid off that she was going to go full force back into the podcasting dream. Kayla was super excited and asked if she could be on an episode. Months passed, things got busy, but the idea of making this happen was still there. Josie had been thinking about it, and two co-hosts were better than one. She thought that Kayla would be great. She wanted to do it, she was excited, she had similar experiences, while also living a very different life, that brought her own spin to everything. We were at our regular bar for weekly bar trivia as always, and that’s when it happened. Josie asked Kayla to be her co-host, and from then on, it was history.

How was the name Casting it Out chosen? Josie’s best friend had a situationship with a man she met at a wedding in the Midwest. He would come around every so often, never committing to a relationship, but acting in each of those moments like it was eventually going to develop into something down the road. There had been enough history, enough back and forth; it seemed like it could be something, and when that idea exists, it hurts to know other girls were in the mix.

Let me set the scene: It’s January and we’re in downtown Nashville. We climbed several flights of stairs to get the the third floor of the bar we decided to go to. I was first to walk in, I turn around and see her, and his tension building. She’s looking at his phone, pointing at it, and then, clear as day, I hear, “Are you seriously talking to other fucking girls right now?” I knew they weren’t together, so I thought I should help by showing her our “reel it in” sign. Our reel it in sign? Pretending to reel in a fishing pole. She looks me dead in my eyes and says, “Don’t tell me to reel it because I’m casting it out!” In that moment, an icon was born, not that she wasn’t already iconic in my life, but I hope everyone who heard that appreciated the sentiment and thought about a time where everyone around them thought they should calm down and not say what they feel, but felt empowered to say what they wanted anyway.

The first three episodes of Casting it Out will be available wherever you listen on 9/2. We can’t wait for you to join us.
